SRK Consulting - this and the following pages contain images of the process, and are rather pointless with a text-only browser. Grind the back of the plate flat. The protrusion which held the bearings and pin varies with the drive model - some are only half an inch high and all aluminum, others are over one inch high with portions made of steel. I use cut-off wheels to remove as much as possible, then an angle grinder for the rest. For 5.25" drives where large areas of the plate will not be covered by the clock movement I use an orbital sander for a smooth finish.
